Description
Chemistry is the foundation behind every great duo. Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra, Pink and Brown, Ferrante and Teicher, Romulus and Remus, Quasi, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin? These duos are beloved because each member pushed the other to new heights and complimented the others vision perfectly. Or, as in the case of Romulus and Remus, murdered one another. Guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill, better known as instrumental rock twosome Hella, have the talent to corral this dangerous and volatile creative chemistry. Their new 5RC release, The Devil Isnt Red, is the surest step yet by this still emerging duo.

I've been a fan of Hella for a few years now and feel that after many listens this is my favourite album. Some things have always bothered me with the common view of Hella; one being that they are a musicians band and two that they belong to the "Math rock" canon. When thinking about the latter I feel that although their music consists of many "math rock" tropes, the result (no matter how rehearsed) is ultimately too messy and loose to belong...maybe like bread and beer (apologies for the metaphor)....However if I continue, Hella would definitely be beer! They are raw and noisy and will definitely not be for everybody but the music they produce can be strangely uplifting and positive. Spencer Seim has long been an extremely underated part of this band as the more obvious chops of Zach Hill have gathered the most attenton...The final track "welcome to the jungle..." contains very inventive and compelling guitar work...Impressive not for just technique but for bizarre tunefulness that makes Hella so unique! You won't listen to this every week but when the right mood hits this packs a punch that no other record can deliver. Give it a try!
