Description
Red bats can hibernate or migrate to warmer regions during the winter. Should this solitary little bat stay or should she go? That’s the question the little red bat ponders as the leaves fall and the nights get colder! The squirrel tells her to stay. But what about the dangerous creatures that hunt red bats in winter? The sparrow urges her to go. But where? Carole Gerber takes young readers on an educational journey through one bat’s seasonal dilemma in Little Red Bat. The For Creative Minds educational section includes: Match the Bat Adaptation, Bat Fun Facts, How Animals Deal with Seasonal Changes, Red Bats and Seasonal Change, and Bat Life Cycle Sequencing Activity.

The red bat doesn't live in caves. It's a tree bat. In this story the little red bat falls to the ground when the autumn leaf she's clinging to is hit by a cold gust of wind. It must be time to migrate. But she's not sure she wants to migrate. On the ground the little red bat meets a talkative squirrel who compliments her ability to camouflage herself in the forest. The red bat is a solitary animal, except during hibernation and mating, but the little red bat in this story meets many animals on the forest floor. They each have advice on which animals, the little red bat should avoid. Animals such as the owl, the raccoon, foxes and others that might make her their prey. Their own stories about what they'll do that winter help her to decide whether to migrate.Christina Wald's illustrations of the autumn forest and its residents are wonderful. Carolyn Gerber's story will interest children of all ages and the Creative Minds section offers an opportunity to learn more about the red bat, migration and hibernation.Sylvan Dell books are used in schools but they would still be a good addition to any child's home library.
