Description
Wealthy people are getting notes from "The Patrons of the Rich" offering "protection" for a large sum... and those who don't pay wind up brutally murdered! Inspector Weston of Scotland Yard is joined by the FBI's Cpt. Allerman (Star Wars' Christopher Lee) to expose the deadly secrets of London's underworld, where every dark street corner could be hiding a vicious killer bent on protecting The Mystery of the Red Orchid! Based on a novel by the popular Edgar Wallace, this stylish installment in the continuing series of German krimi thrillers features a great scene where "Two-Gun Lee" deals with a gangster hitman. Also featuring Klaus Kinski (For a Few Dollars More), Marisa Mell (Danger: Diabolik), and Adrian Hoven (Mark of the Devil). Then the spirit of Jack the Ripper seems to be very much alive in 1960s London as a series of brutal slayings by the Monster of London City has Scotland Yard baffled. In a macabre coincidence, a new play about the famous murderer is about to become a major West End hit... and the leading man is rapidly becoming the prime suspect!

I really enjoyed "Monster of London City." It had so many of the elements I like in a movie: attractive cast, gorgeous sets, beautiful cinematography and a couple of terrific music cues by Martin Boettcher. Although this 2006 DVD isn't rendered to as high a standard as Retro's 2008 DVD featuring "Phantom of Soho," it still looks pretty good. The second feature, "Secret of the Red Orchid," was perfectly suited as bottom half of the double-feature. Not as good as "Monster," and much lighter in tone - but still enjoyable.Too bad more people don't know about/appreciate these films. A blu ray with "Phantom of Soho" and "Monster of London City" would be great. They were produced as companion films by the same team, utilizing each other's set pieces (as well as a few left over from "The Mad Executioners"). Although produced in late '63 and early '64, they were released in the US in 1967 on a double bill and posters for that release still turn up on Ebay occasionally.Glad I got this OOP DVD before they became extinct!
