I delayed reading RED LIGHT in the Katie McGuire Series because of some problems in my life, which meant I have 5 Graham Masterton Novels to read. Not a bad problem to have.My first reaction is that the book is an enjoyable work to read, which goes without saying since I am a fan of Graham Masterton's skillfully told and crafted stories. The best aspect of book number 3 in the series is that there is a history, and an enjoyable one at that. On one level I know what to expect, but this means Graham's work is to both give me what I what I want but still confound me, and let me enjoy myself in the process , and enjoy myself I did. In terms of a well crafted story, for the Masterton fans, I would say this is closer to GENIUS in stylistic terms, but I am not saying that it follows the formula there, just that there are echoes, also, I felt that CHAOS THEORY was a good reference point. Whilst I can say that this is an independent(standalone) book, it does not pre-suppose that you have read books 1 and 2, I would suggest that it would help. Having read Books 1 and 2, you would I suggest have certain vested interests in the unfolding developments. As is the case with Graham's novels, in my view, the characters and their relationships are the key part of the book, and I like that a lot. Even in a police drama, there is enough to anchor you in that world, but not so much that you are drowned in police procedural detail. The best way I would put it is that you get the spirit of the Irish Police, without the letter of the procedural detail. Graham does not seem to be that sort of writer where the technicalities overwhelm the character exposition. Dealing with Katie's quandry as she discovers who is being killed and why is the centre of the moral element so far as the Guarda goes, and I like the way Katie's character is developed and strengthened, in my opinion. She has what some might refer to as the vulnerability of one who can sense who is talking ( spouting) the cats Malogian ( I hope I used that wonderful phrase properly), one who cares for those she loves, but is solid enough to honour her Guarda oath. This is a solid read, enjoyable in all respects, and for fans of this series, as well as of Masterton, a just reason to know why we are fans of this master writer.
