When visiting small local farmers in Portugal and Spain (sunny countries that produce tasty, wholesome fruit), I noticed a lot of the fruit went unharvested. After tasting some of the fruit I was shocked at how incredibly tasty it was. That is when I started thinking of how I could get this fruit from these small farmers to food lovers around the world. Imagine walking around a farm and mainly seeing unharvested fruit: apples, pears, peaches, figs, pomegranate, and persimmon. There must be something wrong with this fruit, right? No at all! To the contrary! It is wholesome fruit, grown in a country with lots of sunshine, and most of this is grown by very small farmers. Enter The Rotten Fruit Box.... So what's the deal with unharvested fruit? We are talking about small, local farmers. Most have a dozen or so fruit trees and don't grow enough fruit to be able to resell to the "big boys." On the other hand, they grow way more fruit than they can pick and eat themselves, so sadly, most go unharvested. After talking to some of the farmers, I began thinking of ways of making this delicious, wholesome, and healthy fruit available to more people. After lots of brainstorming, and some bad ideas, the thought of freeze drying the fruit began to take shape and The Rotten Fruit Box was born.
