Jaff reworks horror and fantasy genes in a modern setting that quickly draws you in. The pacing and plotting is tight and the story is suspensefully revealed. You may be able to guess some plot points, but there are also some well-developed red herrings. So guess away and you’ll most likely still be surprised.What I liked most about ‘Love is Red’ though is the story reworked familiar fantasy and horror archetypes. So an enjoyable familiarity is still experienced as something new.Some critical posters seemed to have missed a couple things. This is an absorbing fun summer read. It’s not trying to be Proust or V.S. Naipaul. People have complained about the lack of characterization. I disagree with that to a certain extent. However I suspect Jaff has designed a slow unfolding of characterization to allow the readers to project into and identify themselves with the main character; which she succeeds at doing. It encourages the reader to want more (it is a thriller after all), to look forward to learning more about Katherine and the other developing characters in future books.Before the next book comes out you’re going to want to re-read ‘Love is Red’ to remember, what seems like at the time, unimportant little details. There are a lot of moving pieces in this well-crafted novel which I am looking forward to finding out where they go.
